Hehehe.. that's totally rad.
Unfortunately they way I do the rounds (basically I figure out the enemy actions before either of you post, that way I can't 'cheat' by knowing what you're going to do.) means I can't change anything to have them react to the taunting this round, but next round all this stuff ought to be taking effect. ^^
Anyway. I ought to have the next round ready for tomorrow morning, hopefully.
Otherwise: Since you gave your gunners orders to fire on a previous round but didn't specify range, they'll both open up at Range 10 if they get the chance (10 is default.. or did I change it to 8? ...I'll check) Just wanted to make sure this is what you intend, since I didn't have the minigunnery tutorial up earlier.

sort of makes more sense that way, anyway, since, at least with ships (i.e. large boats) it takes a while to change course. presumably that would apply to airships, too.

Hehe.. Also I didn't anticipate the course change, which means you may not be getting shot at this round if you win Air Tac... There's an advantage to doing the unexpected. One thing I did forget to do last round was; I should have factored in the stat bonuses your Captains and Pilots get from the Bridge. Not that it would have made much difference last round, but it's something I shouldn't forget. >.> Also I believe I'll add the steam cost of firing each cannon into the Ammo display, since it tends to vary from gun to gun.

Hehe.. yeah, Captain Dallas West was a magnificent fluke of the name generator.
Soooooo... There's one or two quirks I'm trying to get ironed out with the shooting rules... ROE is supposed to make you estimate where your target will be when when your turn rolls around. It's the 'skill' element to shooting. The idea being that if you estimate too closely, (say you say ROE4 and he never gets that close) you don't fire, and if you estimate too far away you miss out on the opportunity to make a closer, more effective shots. (Say you have ROE set to 10, but at the end of the turn you're at range 3. Even though you wind up at a really close range, your gunners will shoot at Range 10.
Occasionally this can get short-circuited. It happened last round, actually. I had L.Pierre's ROE set to 9 (The idea was he would fire and miss. I have the enemy ships acting pretty stupidly for the demo.. enjoy this while it lasts...) But his cannon didn't actually get Shrike in it's field of fire till Range 4. So the earliest it could shoot was Range 4, so it shot at Range 4. Now this time when it happened it was a mistake, but a player could find a way to exploit this pretty easily by simple keeping the ROE out far (on case his target moves) but only letting the target onto his cannons' field of fire at the last moment (Pretty easy to do with side cannons) Thereby keeping the advantage of a Wide ROE (increased chance of firing on a target if it moves somewhere unexpected) with the advantage of short range shots (increased accuracy and damage if the target is where you expect it'll be)
Soooo.. What I think I'm going to implement is a -5 penalty to a gunner for every space the target is -inside- the expected ROE when it fires. So if you tell a gun to fire art ROE 8, and the target doesn't come into the field of fire till Range 4, then there's a -20 penalty to the shot. (In game terms the sights are miscalibrated) The round will still fire and still have a chance of hitting.
So anyway I'll be trying that from now on, and we'll see how it works.
I sort of regret putting you up against a small, fast ship for a starter mission. Hornet is built to be dodgy and have the speed to go somewhere you don't expect in order to foil your attempts at gunnery. That's how it's supposed to operate. I get the feeling it'll be a bit frustrating trying to score hits on it. But we'll see how it goes, I guess...

Yay!
Okay, so last round I added a few things, the 1st of which is sort of an enemy status gauge. If you're wondering what the steam venting is about, basically your Boiler pumps steam into your Pressure tank every round. Your tanks can only hold so much though, so the extra surplus is vented off (If you look at the vanity pics of most of the ships there are little grates or funnels for this where the P.tank compartments are. Usually Boilers have vents too, though this is for exhaust) Anyway this process is visible, and so if someone is venting it meant they have basically a full pressure tank. if they -aren't- it means they didn't top off that round, so their either used a lot, or their boiler can't refill everything they used. Not exactly supercritical information, but I figured it's worth tracking.
I'll be looking for other things to include in the enemy status area too. Mostly more obvious stuff, like fires, etc. I actually have the enemy ships mapped out just like I do yours, but you really won't get to see what's going on in there unless you board them. I'm considering the idea of putting up a basic display for them, but I'm not sure how to do that effectively just yet, and/or whether it's really worth the extra work...

Whew.. Well quite a lot to talk about behind the scenes on this one.. If you checked the loggy bits detailing the hammering that Pierre was taking this round, you can see how nasty damage can be when it's delivered from the front or rear. Armor is the only thing in this game that reduces the power of a shot, Compartments (or crew) offer no resistance. Meaning that a front or rear shot will go all the way from the back to the front of a ship if there isn't any armor to stop it, and basically wreck anything along it's path. (This was something traditional ship battles wanted to avoid at well, having your 'T crossed' was considered a really REALLY bad thing.) This is another good reason to turn broadside to an enemy.
Lucky P. also lost some crew this round, which should be an indication of who deadly air combat can be. 15 damage is hard to soak. -_- Even when it's Area damage.
I cheated a little on your guys' behalf, BTW. Technically with the way your ROEs were set none of your ships would have fired that round. But I decided to try something I'd been considering and bent the Miscalibrated rules to work both ways to see how that effected things. Also I wanted to check my damage procedures. >.>
Shooting is a bit wierd the way I'm doing it now.. I know there are easier ways to do it, but there's a reason it is the way it is now. It's grounded in the regular Steampunk! Roleplaying rules.. I'll talk more about this later, probably, but for now it's under a lot of consideration.
As far as the new Marauder class... Remember the ship I made and was bitching about earlier because it broke my game? .. This is the toned down version of that one under the new construction rules designed to make it less OP...

Aaand Lucky Pierre checks out! The poor beleagured little ship went in almost the worst possible direction once it's bridge controls went out. -_-
Which brings us to an interesting (to me) point, what actually constitutes the 'death' of an airship, in game terms?
In Lucky P's case, It pancaked hard enough to destroy itself entirely and it's crew got turned into raspberry donut filling. But a crash (especially one where it just grounds out rather than hits a brick wall) won't always destroy a ship. It may not be able to fly any more, but there may still be working guns, boiler, pressure tank, etc. The current rules allow ships to fight 'from the ground', though the crew will usually get the hell out of dodge.
But anyway, things that will effectively doom an airship: • Bridge destroyed Ships with wrecked bridges, have their speed and maneuvers determined randomly, and automatically lose 1 vert per turn, so a crash is inevitable at one point or another.
• Boilers destroyed No more steam means nothing to feed the engines, which also means a crash, sooner or later. If you have a big enough Pressure tank with a big enough reserve you might be able to pilot the ship to the ground (basically a straight descent, fingers crossed) before you run out of go-juice. At high altitude you might just be borked, though.
• Pressure tank destroyed Again, no steam means no go juice, and a popped tank automatically sets your steam to 0 and won't let you storm more. Basically unsurvivable (assuming the explosion doesn't destroy your ship right off.) Unless you have more than one tank.
• Loss of engines Currently most ships in the game can lose an engine and still fly (an airship design isn't valid unless it can produce 2.5x it's own weight in lift -enough to hover and ascend a vert- So by default 2 engine craft can stay up on 1 engine, though their maneuverability suffers a lot. If you lose too much power, though, you'll be headed for the ground...
While we're on the subject of airship maladies, let's examine other things that can go wrong...
-Things that catch fire- Boilers- Cannons- Grapples-
Well it's a pretty short list overall... As I've tried to stress, fire can get nasty, though. Especially since it can spread through open spaces and broken bulkheads. It used to damage bulkheads as well, but I took that out... Note that if a compartment is on fire but NOT destroyed, the compartment damage a fire does can cause more (and potentially worse) malfunctions.
-Things that explode- Cannons- -Magazines- -Ammo explosions can be particularly nasty. The damage is determined by the amount of ammunition left in the compartment when it goes up. This can be devastating in a Magazine, but the chances of it happening are actually pretty low. Cannons are a bit more likely. Note that you can dump ammo out of a cannon compartment if you want to, in order to reduce the potential damage of an explosion.
-Pressure tanks- Again, this is the big pop that ships probably don't come back from. Though if you have only a small amount of pressure it might not be as bad as all tat. You'll still probably crash, though. -_-
-Explosion trivia- Explosion damage is determined in part by the size of the space the explosion occurs in. Larger areas concentrate the blast less and therefore reduce the intensity. Explosions are also treated bomberman-style: They radiate in straight horizontal and vertical lines, not touching anything situated diagonally from the point of origin.

Well, you have to actually have a grappling compartment to grapple onto another ship, so if you want to board as-is you'll basically have to send peeps over on jetpacks.
I've actually been considering making a variant on the Vagabond that replaces the side cannon with a grapple... Would make for a more versatile ship and probably not change the performance too much. Might be a good project for this weekend...

I thought the Vagabonds had grapples for some reason. No big. I was hoping to get close enough to maybe think about sending my peeps in jetpacks over...mostly to test the system and we haven't done that yet

I got moved on Friday to the 12-8am shift, having woken up at 7am that day and failing to get any sleep in between then and the shift.
