SABRINA HARDING ==========================================================================="Slingers cresting! Back! Back! Find some cover!"
She's seen personally what those barbs can do; has a patched-over five inch gash where one punched through her shoulder plate and plowed a furrow through her skin. That'd been two days ago in the city. Her first wound. But judging by every one of the old soldiers on Tower, definitely not her last.
She slides in amongst the boulders, most of her squad only a few steps behind. She's proud of them. It's one thing to stand on a firing line in training, but another to hold in the face of the enemy, to meet them and beat them back. They'd done that. There were miles to go still, but the first step had been taken.
A single javelin hisses into the rocks nearby, shattering against a blueish boulder and spraying them all with sharp-edged fragments. She flicks a chip away where it rests against the skin of her neck, and peeks over top of the boulder. The Slingers are advancing down the slope, still at the ragged edge of effective range.
"Stay down, hold fire! Wait for them to come in, then we'll give it to them. Victor Delta, move up a bit, we may need to mount up in a hurry. And get that gun ready."
"We have Mongrels in from the left!" An excitable voice crackles in her earpiece. "I count about a dozen!"
"I see them. Hold fast."
She hears the chugging of Vic Delta's engine and the pop of small rocks under it's tires as it pulls in behind them. She looks down and checks the cylinder on her Grenade launcher. One round ready to fly. "When I call I want MG and rifle fire on the Slingers," She intones into her mic. "I'm going to 'nade the Mo-' A sharp, metallic bang splits the air as something big and fast strikes the roof of the Buffalo at a shallow angle and glances off, spinning away into the distance. Sabrina flattens into the gravel. Another heavy projectile slams into the stone beside the Buffalo's right tire, shattering and skipping along the road in shards.
Much, much too large to be Slinger barbs. She has to find out what. And from where.
She taps her helmet once for luck and peers again over the rock. It takes her a long, long second to find them. Far up on the hill, multi-legged and long limbed, crouching like spiders with strange, humped backs that bristle with spines. In the same second as she sees them the third rod, a jagged splinter the size of a tree limb and moving almost too fast to be seen, whips by over her head and smashes low into the Buffalo's front, crumpling it's armored grille and burrowing deep into the engine compartment. The truck's engine sputters and something inside grates as steam and fluids burst out of the gash, but doggedly keeps turning over as the Buff seesaws on it's suspension.
