Tom “Tick Tock” Richter
Professional Pirate and Sapper
Appearance: At the very nature of the word lean, Tom is perhaps about two steps from looking underfed. Standing at a very unimposing 5’6’’ the 22 year old pirate (much to his chagrin) still bares the fresh (albeit tattooed ) face of a 16 year old. Darting brown eyes examine and peel apart the world from a tangled head of wild brown hair (which has more than it’s share of singeing). He dresses much to the tune of his profession with leather vests, shorts, and brightly colored kerchiefs, seeming to favor function over style. He can almost always be seen lugging a well oiled leather rucksack over his shoulder, bristling with a set of knives, and if one gets close enough, smelling strongly of phosphorous. Just recently he's taken to wearing a necklace that's threaded through a massive crocodile tooth, and refuses to part with it under any circumstances.
Tattoos: A set of winding black tendrils on the left side of his face, on his right shoulder a picture of a smoking goblin surrounded by the words “Gremlin Corps”
Demeanor: While outwardly friendly and fun seeking, the truth about Tom is that he’s just as volatile as the explosives he deals in. He’s “sensitive” about certain subjects, particularly, his height, appearance, social status, and reputation. Jibes at the matters in question above result in a much more violent and unreasonable Tom emerging, a fact that has earned him more than one night cooling his heels in the local jail. Despite this major flaw, under the pressure of “work” Tom reacts smoothly and naturally to threats, working with an eerie calm and enthusiasm that belies that nature of his profession. In the end, Tom’s traits give way to his pirate lifestyle, at his happiest when he’s on the move, with a good crew, and on a decent ship.
History: Tom hails from a large family of sod-busters (5 brothers 7 sisters) who were chased off their land by the local railroad company who was expanding through, and didn’t feel the need to pay them. Still very young at this moment, Tom came away from the event with two lessons learned. The toughest son of a bitch walks away with the prize, and don’t trust the man with the buck. His family decided to take up grease farming (dependable work, but hardly prosperous) in the city, and if you weren’t grease farming, you had better have been contributing in some other way. Tom (who hated the idea of herding and slaughtering grease-pups) attempted to do this through skulduggery and thieving, however he wasn’t a very good thief. He finally reached this conclusion when attempting to steal some vials of thermite, and instead burned a hole in the side of a building. The fireworks vendor that he had stolen from was very surprised to see what was left of her stock returned to her by the very thief that took it. While she cracked him over the head for what he did, she was more impressed with him surviving the thermite’s ignition, and offered him an apprenticeship under her. At the age of 15 Tom believed his apprenticeship completed, and figured that the art of explosives, while fun, was expensive, and not very lucrative. At this rate he would end up a grease farmer, who knew how to put out a grease fire. Determined not to meet this fate, he turned his attention to the town’s ports, and with romantic tales of piracy in his ears, signed up as hand on a ship. Under the direction of Captain Dirk Gammel, he enjoyed 7 years of raiding under a government flag, even working his way up to join Gammel’s hand picked saboteurs known as Gammel’s Gremlins. However Gammel enjoyed too much success in his career, and in an attempt to appease foreign investors, his patron country ordered his crew’s decommission. When Gammel didn’t comply, his airship was completely destroyed by the local navy while in harbor. Tom and a handful of crewmen survived, but with their captain and ship gone, didn’t have the spirit to pick a fight with the government. Tom now floats from port to port, earning what wages he can, and always keeping an eye open for a way to stick it to the man.
