The valley floor reverberates with gunfire, the sound echoing between the stony hills, doubling and redoubling and going on and on and on like a roaring waterfall, overpowering even the anxious voices buzzing in her earpiece. Her squadmates' tracers flit and streak over head and the slope the the north is churned by bullet impacts, spitting dust and stone shards into the air as sickly green-and-blue mist explodes and billows around the forms of the onrushing Geist. The sideways hailstorm lashes the hillside from one end to end and tears into the enemy, spilling their blood and burning acid on the slope, but only a few of them falter and fall.
Her chest plate scrapes against the jagged-edges rocks beneath her as she shifts her heavy rifle on it's bipod. The blue, squirming bulk of a Maggot appears for a moment through the smoke and mist, and she sights in on it, pressing her cheek to the weapon. At this range the high-power scope brings the creature into her face; she can see the folds and wrinkles in it's thick blue skin, the old scars and pock marks of healed wounds, the blue seeping blood and greenish acid that rolls down over front as it moves.
Probably no human has ever looked on that creature so closely and lived, she thinks. Her finger is already tightening on the trigger; a minute motion of her hand and shoulder, almost imperceptible, keep the muzzle of her powerful rifle pointed at the Geist's center mass. At this range the trajectory is nearly flat.
The rifle kicks into her shoulder. The bullet, faster than sound, arrives at it target before her senses can even fully register that it has departed. The muzzle brake brews up dust and stones at her sides.
MARINA BATRICE =============================================
Bats squeezes off a burst into a half-glimpsed target in the mass of moving Geist descending the hillside. Looks like a hit, but it's hard to tell. A quick glance over her shoulder confirms that the Mobbers are still advancing from the east.
She raises a boot and kicks at the divider between turret and driving compartment.
"Leo it's time to get the fuck out of here!"
Leola doesn't answer but the Buffalo's engine rumbles and the lightly armored truck noses forward, bouncing roughly as it's front tires leave the road and skid on the slick, jagged stones. The last of the turret gun's rounds jingle in the can.
Marina keys her mic. "Victor Charlie is pulling back, moving to-" an off-key whistle stops her mid-sentence. The sound of a Goliath's strange bombs in mid-flight is scratched deep into her memory, along with the bloody results. "FUCK LEO MOVE IT MOVE IT MOVE IT!!"
The Buffalo's engine howls and the bomb lands in the rocks several yards behind, a hivelike construction made of bone and god knows what else, skidding intact for a half-second before exploding in a wave of shrapnel and heat. The Buffalo lurches sideways, it's hull suddenly ringing with the impact of a hundreds of shards of stone, hardened bone and spikes of metal. The rear cargo bed is shredded, with holes straight through it's sheet metal sides and jagged shrapnel embedded in seats and cargo containers. The turret gun is struck and twisted out of Bats' hands and one of the narrow bullet-glass covered view slits is now spiderwebbed.
"Goddamn!" Bats' hand is stinging, but a cursory check of the gun reveals no serious damage. She keys the intercom. "Leo, you up?" Bats waits two seconds for an answer, her ears still ringing. Nothing. With one last look out the cracked window she crouches down out of the turret and leans forward into the drivers compartment. Leola is there and seems fine, though covered in glass dust from a partially shattered driver's side window and rubbing at her eyes. The Buff is still running but the engine doesn't sound good. It squeaks and shudders and a line of steam or smoke curls up out of the front grille.
"Ah, shit." Bats observes. "Leola, you good?"
Leola gives her a thumbs up, her other hand still rubbing at her face. "Yeah. Headphones came off. I think the tires are fucked but I can try to get 'er moving."
Bats swears. "Great. I was afraid this would easy."
