Considered one of Caterina Shipyards more unusual designs, the Hornet is a small, fast vessel with a reputation for quirkiness. Designed as a multirole craft, the Hornet sees wide use as a patrol craft and interceptor, though it has a reputation as a pirate class as well, owing to it's speed and the presence of a grapple.
Outiftted with three engines and made of comparatively light construction, the crafy is nimble and quick, but also notoriously difficult to handle. In order to save weight, it features a smaller than normal pressure tank, and a lower-output boiler to match. This system is perfectly adequate for powering the craft, but leaves little left over in the way of a steam surplus. The ship simply cannot run at full engine capacity and restore it's pressure reserves, and it must effectively 'rest' between making attacks. Another thing that detractors of the class are quick to point out is the small fuel capacity.
The ship's armament is impressive for a craft it's size, sporting a broadside cannon normally only found on ships of the line. Captains who met with success at the helm of a Hornet stress the importance of using the craft's speed and maneuverability to dart in for close ranged attacks and then moving quickly away again. Owing to the size of the shells it fires, the cannon has a sharply limited ammunition capacity, and so every shot made must count.
