So looking at our current fleet of usable ships we have
A speed freak carrier. A front puncher with long range broadsides. And a light Missile boat with fighter coverage.
So I am thinking our next ship should be either a plasma boat, with some point defense, or a dedicated missile thrower with some forward fire power.

For the plasma/point defense ship, I think Krab's no-longer-brick-shaped Battle Brick (or the similar one I posted) are about as good as you can get with 30 compartments. I tried making one with 6 plasma cannons, but there's not enough room for all the reactors I need and the point defense guns. I can post it if you want, but I don't think it would do very well... For a missile thrower, is something like this what you had in mind?

Hmm, I'd like to get into a similar ship to my kite but more accomidated to the new fighter rules and to give me something to do when all my fighter slots are occupied and currently not being blasted apart.
It doesn't need to be terribly fast at all since it will often be away from all the action, but it would need long range weaponry and a good ammount of Fighter launching bays, I'll probably only want a few interceptor bays though, not sure what I could do.
Alternatively just pick up one of the current designs and just roll with it.

Extra nukes since they seem the most useful type of torpedo. I'm kinda iffy on having the EMPs at all... I feel that swapping them for more nukes would be more effective, but who knows.

Yeah... EMPs are pretty weak right now, I'm not sure what the hell I was thinking. >.> I wouldn't feel bad about not taking them for right now, I'll probably find a way to either punch them up a bit or try out a different effect a few missions down the line.
Edit: The .zip file that contains all the compartment art has been updated (I'm pretty sure) to include all the new stuff.
