Edit 8/29/2013: I've put together a relatively complete demo version of the game that will let you put together a bunch of pods and play a game. The latest version features online play! You can download it at www.mediafire.com/?bxchbaa0z4p48zeIf you have any comments, suggestions, or bug reports, feel free to leave 'em here. This is still a work in progress... my tentative to-do list is below. - Save changes to pilot stats (spend XP, kills) after a game is completed
- Fix any manual move glitches
- Add an "Undo" feature to cancel a move/jump (if the pod didn't set off a trap)
- Allow destroyable terrain (buildings/walls)
- Add beam cannons as a weapon type
- Include an add/edit pilot screen
- Include a pod builder (after the release of updated build rules)
- Include a map editor (after adding missing map features such as destroyable buildings and walls)
(Since the SA thread closed down, further updates are unlikely. If you run into any show-stopping bugs, though, let me know and I'll see what I can do.) The rest is the original post. --- It's still nowhere close to being done, but I've been building a little Battlepod video game with XNA. All it does right now is plunk a few pods on a map and let you view their status, but hey, it's a start. The interface is pretty blah, but that can always be fixed by swapping in a few snazzy textures and fonts. I'd eventually like to get this to the point where two players can each control a group of pods in a network game, but that assumes I won't run out of motivation before I finish. Anyway, thanks for thinking up the game, Grave - you've given me a fun little side project here. ;D

Well then. Allow me to be the first to say: Holy fucking shit. I wish I had the talent/knowledge to do that myself. : / You know if the SA playtest had tanked, my next step would have been to start learning programming. (Because, you know, you can just do that, right?) I know it's a lot early to be making long-term plans and this is just a for-fun project for you, but if there's a chance this could be an actual thing then I would absolutely jump the hell all over it.

This. Yes to this. It would be awesome to see this turned into an video game (and for Gravedust to get some recognition and something back for his work in making the system). I could see something like this working really well.

Wow, thanks, you guys. If the project has support, I guess I'll have to keep going until I can put out something playable. Seriously, I'll probably keep working on this as long as people are interested in it and we can keep a fun game going in the thread. So... everyone keep doing what you're doing and I'll see what I can put together. Oh, and my ulterior motive for posting this was to bother Gravedust for more resources. I like to think I'm a decent programmer, but I am also a terrible artist... it got this far because I grabbed a bunch of the images Gravedust posted earlier. If you have anything that would look cool (like those little pod icons from the battle maps?), I'd love to include them instead of slapping something together myself. And if anyone has comments or ideas about how things should look or work, fire away.

His method lets you take a single image and just rotate it. Making it like this would require a lot more images and at this stage I'm not sure how much he wanted to draw...XD

Like you said, I can't really show facing unless I turn the icon upside down or something. I could grab one of the maps, crop the pod icons out, and edit out the backgrounds and unit numbers, but that's kinda tedious... if it isn't too much trouble to send me one or two png files of the top-down icons, I'd rather go that route. (I don't have Illustrator.)

This shall be done! ...Just not right now, I'm going to be busy most of the nigh. Tomorrow seems likely however. I also have the source files for all the pod portraits at 300dpi because I am insane. In the master files the coloring is separate from the lineart and the non-color-changing parts like viewports and weapon glow effects. The upshot is I can make them whatever color I want pretty quickly, though not all color shifts look equally great. Anyway. Point being: Expect stuff tomorrow. Yep. ..We may also need to do some lawyer stuff to ensure you don't steal my project, but I expect that'll be pretty mild and probably far down the road.

Take as long as you want with the images, I'm not in a hurry. And we can figure out some lawyer stuff if you want, but believe me, the last thing you need to worry about is me running off with the game. What kind of idea thief would announce himself like this?

There is now a menu to give commands! ...and now I need to write something that figures out what spaces the pod can move to. Thrilling, I know. Holiday stuff will probably keep me from making too much progress on this over the next couple weeks, but it's coming together.
