Subterranean rocket racing!
The objective of Descender is to maneuver your ship through each of the levels and land safely in order to reach the final level in under 9 minutes total. Fortunately only your best time for each level counts towards the total, so you can retroactively buy yourself more time to finish the whole game by going back to beat earlier levels faster.
This version introduces more levels and a more gradual difficulty curve, a 'new trophy' system, scoring system, new level select screen, and introduces a timed level mechanic.
Though this version is less difficult up front than it's predecessor, please remember: EXPLODING IS NORMAL. (Seriously, you will probably die a lot. Don't be discouraged.)
DOWNLOAD IT HERE (49Mb)
OPERATING SYSTEM:
• Windows 7 and 8 tested, XP probably works too.
INSTALL:
• Standalone executable, no installation required. Download and run from wherever you like.
• IF YOU HAVE THE PREVIOUS ALPHA, please DELETE IT before you run the current version.
The updated version will break the older one, but running both could potentially cause a conflict. This shouldn't be a problem with subsequent releases.
FEEDBACK:
All comments are appreciated! However if you would like to be extra helpful, please consider answering some of these specific questions, so I can better tune in the player experience, and set the gold/bronze/silver times for each level. (Incidentally, the Gold times are the best times I can achieve consistently. See if you can beat me at my own game. )
• How long you played for.
• The highest level you got to.
• What your best times and scores were for each level. (Viewable on the level select screen)
• If you beat the Alpha, what was your Total Mission Time?
• Any particular area(s) you had difficulty getting past.
• Anything about the game or it's controls or mechanics that confused you.
• Anything that stuck out as being particularly annoying.
• Anything that stuck out as being particularly fun or interesting.
• Anything you find that you suspect might be a bug that is not listed below:
KNOWN ISSUES::
Occasionally when hitting the floor at high horizontal speed and a relatively low vertical speed, the ship may get stuck and be unable to lift off again. It happens just frequently enough to be listed here, but infrequently enough that it's hard to reproduce. So I haven't got a workaround yet. It if happens, you will have to reset the level from the pause menu (press escape during a level)
The sound effect volume slider does not presently work, I was getting some weird results so I disabled it. The Music slider works though, as does the master volume.
The "Effects" setting (High, Medium, Low) is toggleable but not currently implemented. It will eventually handle the number of effects sprites that are spawned, deleting wreckage and other cleanup-y things. The game as it is now can be considered the 'high' Effects setting. …If I don't get complaints about chugging machines I might even be able to pump things up a bit.
