Well this is awkward...I'm not sure what we should be doing here. Actually, we could try and ask about why this and that is happening and learn something out of this. Cliffs notes version of what the deal is w/ the Sombrans:-Long ago in a galaxy far, far away-Prophet: Go to these coordinates in the ass end of space and you will find a sacred planet where you can live in peace. Just don't mess with it, okay? Settlers: Cool. Hey there really is a planet here, it's blue and pretty, but it's sacred and we don't want to make it.. uh.. angry. So we'll settle on the furthest moon from it. It's called Sombra so we'll be Sombrans. -years later- *spinning logo*Scout: So, just heading through this neck of the wood and HOLY SHIT!! that gas giant has a shit-ton of extremely rare minerals. This is one hell of a find! *Enter millions of prospectors and several Universal conglomerates. who start drogue-mining clover for precious gases.*Sombrans: Shit.. Guys, please stop messing with Culver. It's sacred to us and we were here first. We want you to leave. Everyone else: Fuck no. In fact, to better exploit this system's resources, we're going to crack this moon apart with a GFD and suck out the delicious minerals. Sombrans: That's sacrilege. Everyone else: The silence you hear is the empty void of space; devoid of air, life and any fucks we give about your religion. Check this out: *cracks calamity in half* Extremist Sombrans: Okay, that's fucking it. We've put up with your shit so far, but this has got to stop. *Steals GFD, uses it to destroy Courtesan, the moon that is the home base for most of the mining operations.*Nonextremist Sombrans: What?! Why did you do that!? Everyone else: DICK MOVE! FUCK YOU GUYS! Extremist Sombrans: …Okay, I'm not sure what we were expecting would happen, in all honestly... *War happens, Sombra loses, GFD is used to destroy Sombra, the GFD itself is destroyed and bits of the Sombra debris field royally fuck JumpSat about 5 minutes after you arrive in-system.*Given that they just lost a war and the majority of their population on an exploding moon, it appears their plan now is to flee the system. They are trying to assemble what remains of their people in a convoy, and at a certain time burn out of Culver's orbit and into the orbit of a different planet will be pulling close relatively soon.

Damnation by association...lovely.
This really does feel like a fight we can't win unless we either pull off some serious tactical manuvers or something occurs that changes things dramatically, I am curious to this 'opportunity' that Borrelly is offering but at the same time I really don't know what the right choice here is, does he even know that the Sombrans just want to be out of the system and away from them?
Actually, I wonder if we told him about what the Sombrans were actually doing...barring specific co-ordinates and such...that something could happen? Or if Artype was actually carrying something illegal too?
Also there actually is one right choice, destroy Artype next time we get a better chance.

============================================ ::EVENTS::• Pannier is stopped and boarded before it reaches the edge of Shard space. ============================================ ::TRANSMISSIONS:: < Borrelly >Well then, thanks for not making a mess of things; Your cooperation will be noted. Let's discuss what happens next. Before we took the bridge, Pannier's captain wisely destroyed all the ships files, but I'm betting that you still have some coordinates. So, here's what I intend: We took the Pannier mostly intact. Once we've emptied her of crew and passengers, you will then escort the ghost ship to her final destination. When the Sombrans at the rendezvous point come out of hiding, Skildir, Artype and my ship will burn in and we'll all ambush them. You'll help, obviously. Oh. And we'll have one additional surprise. We found a fusion warhead among Pannier's cargo. They won't tell me what they intended to use it for, but WE'RE going to use it to detonate Pannier once it gets close enough to their ships to do some damage. Should make for a nice surprise. Once we mop up, we'll all split the bounty and become heroes for ridding Culver of one of the last remnants of Sombran power. And I'll personally ensure that all record of your previous involvement with the Sombrans is erased. Hell, I can make it look like it was your idea to double-cross them all along. The CLU will love that. If that's not your style though, then you can take your fine and scoot out of here.

I wouldn't like to do that, but it doesn't seem like we have much of a choice in the matter...
PLUS We'd be forced to work with bloody Artype of all people...blech.

Hm. Skildir, Borrelly, Artype, and our fleet of four against an unknown Sombran force that most likely includes Erenies, Maginot, and Brundle along with Hylaeus and Hurlant. And probably more, since we're going in with seven ships. I say let's do it. It's pretty much an offer we can't refuse, and the Sombrans trying to smuggle a high-power warhead is making me doubt their good intentions. Plus, if we get there and we don't like the odds, the triple-cross is always an option. Just gotta make sure none of the lawmen survive to tell the tale...

I vote we do it and triple cross them anyway, NO SURVIVORS, then we can launch a daring rescue of the civilians.

So, unless the vote ties it looks like operation octuple-cross is go. Things are pretty busy this week but I'll get started on things soon hopefully.

I really really don't like this.
On one hand it's clear the there are in fact Extremist Sombrans on the other hand going over the mission that you ran into them a lot of them really do seem like they just want out of this mess.

I don't like where any of this is going either, after this I feel like we should go see about either spending our money on ship improvement or doing something that won't piss off entire sectors of space (even though it's for the most part the 'right' thing). Like Pirate hunting?

Well hmmn. Looks like it's a tie, then. Fortunately(?) my schedule is all jammed up this week so you have time for further discussion if you want.. If nobody's decision changes I'll roll a die or something. But yeah, this is a very sandbox-y campaign, so there's no 'right' or 'wrong' faction to side with or course to take. (Though if you piss everyone off you're Gonna Have A Bad Time.)

Blarg, sorry for missing a bit lately, there has been a lot else going on. But I'm mostly finished now so we should be trucking along again soon.
To (belatedly, sorry,) answer your question, the fine is about 5Mil each, plus another Upkeep tick.
If that effects anybody's decision let me know, and sorry for not getting back to this sooner. With luck I should be able to finish what I've been working on today, and then get started on whatever the new map is tomorrow.

======================================= BLU1::Winged Oyster::"Ironsides"::• Nothing to report ======================================= BLU2::Battle Brick::"The Brickyard"::• Nothing to report ======================================= BLU3::Kite::"Magic School Bus"::• Nothing to report ======================================== BLU4::Plasma Brick::• Nothing to report ============================================ ::TRANSMISSIONS:: < Borrelly >All right then, let's go over the plan. Your four pretend to escort the Pannier to the rendezvous point. The Pannier is flying on remote piloting; it can move but won't be able to fire it's weapons. One of you will have to navigate for it. Drive the Pannier close to the Sombran ships and set off the warhead. The Fusion explosion will be detectable from a long way off, so that'll be my and Skildir's cue to burn in and complete the ambush. Between all of us we'll be able to take down the Sombrans, especially if they are damaged by the Pannier's explosion. In the event we need more firepower, the Vis Pacem ship Stormcat will be on station nearby, but I'd rather not split the glory more than I need to, so unless things go south, Stormcat will stay out of it. One other thing to take note of: In order to avoid detection, the Sombrans have been hiding out in a Shadow Nebula. Shadow Nebulas are hell to penetrate with long range or targeting sensors, so don't be surprised if you miss shots because of a false positive or a dropped lock. Fortunately they're also full of all kinds of weird fields and radiation bands, so reactors barely work and it's all shields can do just to maintain their integrity. If they're hiding in the Nebula, they'll have to come out eventually. Trust me on this; when all is said and done we'll be looking like heroes, and the reward is massive for this particular bunch. ============================================ ::MISSION EVENTS::+Remote piloting the PannierThe Pannier can be ordered to move, but cannot fire weapons. Choose somebody to handle the Pannier's movements as well as their own Ship. +Detonating the PannierDetonating the Pannier will destroy it and create a Radius 5 explosion that will deal (2x10) damage. This explosion effect will NOT effect any ships that are in the "dead zone" (the diagonal squares radiating from the point of explosion, as per firing arcs.) At the end of the round after the explosion, Borrelly and Skildir will appear somewhere within the Ambush Quadrant. +ReinforcementsIf Borrelly or Skildir are disabled, destroyed, or flee, Stormcat will appear from somewhere on the east map edge. If another ship is disabled or destroyed, Artype may appear on the map. Additional Sombran ships may arrive to replace their ships that are destroyed. +Shadow NebulaAny non-AOE attack against a ship inside the Shadow Nebula will have a 50% chance of missing automatically. Ships inside the nebula cannot recharge their shields, and do not regenerate energy if they end their turn there. (Exiting the nebula to recharge your shields and then returning to it is permissible, but you will still not regen.) ((I also reserve the right to modify the Nebula's properties if it turns out I need to. >.> It's mostly just in there because I like trying out new zone effects.)) +Backstabbing and subterfuge. There is plenty of room for it, if you decide it's worth it and you want to. ============================================ ::MISSION OBJECTIVES::Destroy SombransDestroy or disable the Sombran vessels. (+140Mil, split between players) (+20 CLU rep) (+20 additional CLU Rep if Borrelly survives) (-Sombran rep) ============================================

My gut reaction is to follow the plan and attack the Sombrans. GREY1 and 2 still make me nervous, but between the bomb and our backup we should be able to take them.
...if there aren't more ships hiding in that nebula, but I don't want to get too paranoid just yet.
Plus, the triple-cross is going to be tricky to pull off if the guys we need to whack aren't even on the map yet. And if we do start attacking the sheriffs, I'm sure Artype is going to run off and tattle instead of joining the party.
So I'll vote for the plain old double-cross and siding with the CLU. Unless anyone has an idea about how to pull off the triple-cross without landing us on all the wanted posters in the sector?

Apart from just leaving? Not quite sure...we could try to remote defuse the warhead on Pannier but other than that I haven't got many ideas.
...Actually, we could probably just detonate the warhead inside the nebula or hell...hide in there ourselves if we could without getting shot at.

After rereading, the setup might be a bit confusing so let me re-explain it a bit. The Sombrans don't yet realize the Pannier has been tampered with, so it should be possible to drive it right up to one or more of them and set off the explosive. (Unless you do something blatantly suspicious or threatening.) It probably won't be enough to destroy a ship outright (unless you get lucky) but in the tests I've run a nice broadside detonation is usually enough to drop shields and inflict some damage. The Pannier's detonation is also Skildir and Borrelly's cue to show up and start breaking skulls from the zone on the right. In the case that either Skildir or Borrely is taken out of action, Stormcat will show up and occupy one of their slots as reinforcements. Stormcat is an early design and not necessarily the best, but it's Size 50. And if another ship on your side drops, Artype will show up. The Good Side: The reward is really nice. The Bad side: More or less the end of the Sombran faction as an effective force, though there will still be some left in places. ------------------------- If you decide to instead help the Sombrans you have a few options on how to go about it. But the most obvious one (to me) is to explain the situation to the Sombrans and make arrangements to ambush the ambushers as they enter the deployment zone. As before, Stormcat will appear after Skildir or Borrelly falls, and Artype will show up when the second ship drops. The Good Side: The Sombrans are still around as a faction. The Bad Side: If word gets out you are Sombran sympathizers, (if you do not destroy Borrelly, Skildir, Stormcat, and Artype) your CLU and Moon Guard reps will plummet and life in-system will definitely get more interesting. (To give you a fair shake at defeating all these ships, they'll have to be on the board a few rounds before they can try to escape, and most won't try to run.) Either way though: Lots of explosions. Any questions, please let me know.

Oh. So the posse doesn't know exactly what's happening while they're off the map. They just know they need to show up when the bomb goes off or when an allied ship blows up. Meaning we actually do have a chance at shutting them up if we side with the Sombrans.
...that changes things.
If we side with the CLU, we get a relatively straightforward battle with a few gimmicks (bomb, nebula, and allied reinforcements).
If we side with the Sombrans, we get a short 8 vs. 2 dogpile where the only question is whether we can kill them before they retreat. (Well, 8 vs. 4, but CLU only gets 2 ships at a time.) I... think that's doable, but I don't really have a good feel for how long the larger ships will last under an all-out barrage. And since we only have a few turns to kill them, a bad run of luck with the dice would be disastrous instead of slightly annoying.
I'll still throw in my vote for the CLU, but I think this can work either way. I'm okay with helping the Sombrans if that's what you guys prefer.

So I guess we're helping the Sombrans? Do we need to play out the turns moving into position for the ambush, or can we just say where we want our ships/remotes to end up?

Yeah, we'll play it from the beginning so peeps should give orders and somebody probably ought have a chat with the Sombrans about what all's going on, etc. So long as there's no shooting, round updates should go pretty quick.
