MOONS & AREAS

::CULVER::
Culver is a Gas Giant approximately the size of Jupiter, and is the fifth planet in the GreismanXXIII system. (Sol19352353) Culvert is inhospitable to life, but many of it's orbiting moons have large established colonies on them. Culvert is home to many rare and useful gaseous elements, at concentrations over fifteen times the universal norm. It is therefore considered to be one of the most profitable planets in known space. It's resources are regularly harvested via various drogue-mining operations.
::INNER RING::
Formerly the moon Courtesan. Destruction of the moon created an expansive debris field that orbits Culvert in a ring. The Inner Ring is hazardous to ships, and has complicated drogue-mining operations considerably.
::COURTESAN:: (destroyed)
So-called because of it's close proximity to Culvert. Formerly the primary base and processing plant for extremely profitable Culvert drogue-mining operations. It's destruction was caused by a Gravity Flux Device, (GFD) which was hijacked by Sombran isolationists after the sundering of Calamity.
::CULSAT::
An manufactured space platform, constructed by Titan Universal before the destruction of Courtesan in order to harness a share of it's mining traffic. Originally shared an orbit with Courtesan, was forced to move further out after the moon's destruction to avoid the debris belt.
::CALAMITY::
The moon (formerly designated as Ferdinand) now known as known as Calamity was torn apart by a GFD in a sanctioned planetary demolition, in preparation for extraction of unusually rich mineral deposits. In addition to hundreds of smaller pieces, the two halves of the sundered moon remain intact and in an engineered orbit around one another to prevent them from crashing together or drifting apart.
::SHARD::
A large section of planet cast off during Calamity's Sundering, it now houses a mining colony and serves as base for Calamity's mineral extraction. Since the destruction of Courtesan, it also handles functions as a base for a large portion of the drogue-mining operations as well. Despite it's small size, it is the most populous of all the lunar colonies and overcrowding is an issue. It's orbit around Calamity's two halves is artificially maintained.
::CASTOR & POLLUX::
These two moons are nearly identical in size and composition, and are probably the result of a catastrophic impact that split a larger planetoid in two. Castor and Pollux share an orbit though they always remain on opposite sides of Culvert. The two moons are mineral-poor and inhospitable and have only been colonized lightly, though they are often used as layover and cache points for passing ships to avoid high docking fees at CulSat and Shard.
::ICARUS::
A small moonlet with an irregular orbit. Icarus is small enough that Culvert's other moons effect it's trajectory, making it's long-term behavior difficult to predict. However Icarus' decaying orbit around Culver will cause it to be pulled into the gas giant in approximately two hundred years, unless it collides with another moon first.
::FIRINEL::
A large, geothermally active moon, Firinel provides an abundance of natural energy and is home to very large and advanced shipyards operated by Maxxa Universal.
::TRITON::
A large water-rich moon capable of supporting life, Triton is an agricultural moon that produces consumables, including food animals as well as vegetables. Triton contributes the lion's share of consumables for the system.
::JUMPSAT::
A Hyperdrive Beacon and Charging Station. Heavily damaged by a debris field after the destruction of Sombra, it is disabled and no longer jump-capable. Jumpsat is in an quickly decaying orbit and drifting towards Culvert, and expected to impact the planet within a year if repairs to it's stationkeeping thrusters are not completed. The size and complexity of the required parts, and the inability to use the station as a jump beacon are complicating the repair process.
::OUTER RING::
Formerly the moon Sombra, the Outer ring is a widely spaced debris field that formed after the Moon's destruction. Spread over an extremely wide area, it poses a small risk to interplanetary cruiser traffic.
::SOMBRA:: (Destroyed)
The first colonized moon in Culver's orbit, established in 3299 by a small religious group who believed Culver was a sacred point or refuge promised to them after years of persecution. At first dismayed and then enraged by the growing number of colonists and mining operations centering around Culver, the Sombrans took control of the GFD used to sunder Calamity and used it to destroy Courtesan. The remaining moons turned against Sombra, and after retaking control of the GFD in Sombra's Orbit, used it to demolish the moon in the same manner as Courtesan. The GFD was destroyed in the process, and JumpSat critically damaged as well.
::UMBRA::
A large but distant moon, Umbra has no important resources, but serves as a convenient staging grounds for pirates. It's remote location far from the other colonized moons makes it difficult to attack and easy to defend.

FACTIONS
=======
::TITAN UNIVERSAL::
A Universal Conglomerate that operates or otherwise sponsors a large portion of Culvert's mining operations. CulSat was built and deployed by Titan Universal, and is leased to the CLU.
Maintains a small corporate fleet, based primarily on CulSat.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:: MAXXA UNIVERSAL::
A Universal Conglomerate that has managed to capture a significant portion of mining operations and is Titan's chief incorporated rival in the system.
Maxxa has a tight control over Culver System's infrastructure, and is in control of most of the BioFarms on Triton, as well as the shipyards on Firinel.
Maintains a small corporate fleet, based on Triton and Firinel.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
::CULVERT LUNAR UNION:: (CLU)
An ad-hoc organization comprised of representatives of the various lunar governments. Based on Shard.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
::VIS PACEM::
A Security Fleet under contract to the CLU and tasked with the protection of lunar assets and transport ships. Maintains a presence around every Culver moon with the exception of Umbra.
Are informally based on CulSat.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
::MOON GUARD::
Protection fleets usually sponsored by whichever colony they represent. They aid endangered vessels and protect the colony's assets against pirates.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
::UMBRAN PIRATES::
Culver's profitability makes it a prime destination for all manner of privateers and pirates.
While these usually operate and strike individually or in small groups, occasionally they will organize for larger operations.
It is rumored that many of these 'pirates' are actually secretly in the employ of other factions.

TERMS & TECH
==========
+Drogue mining
A 'mining' process that involved sending a probe through the atmosphere of a gaseous planet. Once in the atmosphere the probe deploys a parachule-like drogue that pulls in as much of the atmosphere as possible while the probe stores the gas in compression tanks before activating it's engines and boosting back into orbit once more, where it is picked up by it's parent ship. It is a costly and time consuming process, used for only the most precious of materials and emeralds.
+Gravity Flux Device (GFD)
Gratity Flux Devices are starship-scale machines that create localized areas of increased gravity. These fluctuations are actually rather slight, and have no effect upon ships or other non-planetoud scale objects, they can be used on moons or other very large solids to cause them to break apart. GFDs are rare, complex and expensive machines.
+ Hyperdrive Charging Station
While Hyperdrive engines are (relatively) small, the amount of energy needed to spool one up is enormous, requiring energy generators and storage too large to pack into a Starship. Charging Stations exist to power up a Ships' H-engine enough to allow it to jump. They are generally situated as far out from gravity sources as possible to avoid jump interference.
+Hyperdrive Beacon
Hyperdrive Beacons generate Hyperspace pulses that allow a ship in H-drive to home in on them. Without such beacons to show the way to a destination, even the most precisely calibrated jump drops a ship millions of miles from their destination. Most Charging Stations include Hyperdrive Beacons.
