Okay so, I think I mentioned a few times that I've been working on compartment art for the airships before I start building a ton of them. So before I take off for a week I wanted to share what I've got so far: So this is a mock-up of how the ships status sheet will look. (Using a Vagabond as my testbed.) As you can see I haven't done the engines yet, so they are flller'd for the moment. Also the Bridge and the side-facing gun are holdovers from a previous style. (note the outlines) that'll be redone to match up with the rest a bit better. But yeah. As I mentioned I'm doing everything in a modular fashion, so it's easy to just turn a few layers on and off to get some unique-ish looking results. (the background (metal or wooden walls) are independent of the frame (the box that surrounds the contents of the Compartment, so it's easy to mix-and match.) and the actual Compartment contents are sandwiched between the two. Everything is built in Illustrator then flattened in Photoshop (then imported into the ship's file, which is in Ilustrator.) I'm planning on having at least 2 variations for every type of Compartment, (to avoid things like how the bunkroom is clearly tiled) though in the end I'd like to have upwards of 5 for the more common ones. If I get the chance over the week I'll see if I can't sketch out concepts for the stuff I haven't done yet so I can put them into production when I get back. At the moment I've been designing things as I build them. So anyway, yep. The face of things to come, more or less. ...really wish I had those engines finished...

Just a heads up, Monday and perhaps the rest of the week I have jury duty, wherein they do not allow cell-phones. So I'll be a little late in the day with my posts, but I will be posting.

So heyyyyyy. Today is a day for making new ships, as most of the week will be, actually... One of the ships I planned on building was the Raven class (Of Morrigan Fame) and I was halfway through coming up with a layout for it but then I decided since I didn't really come up with the ship and it's part of Tom's backstory I thought I'd ask Bren to decide what it's characteristics are, in terms of size, layout, armament, etc, and I'll build something as close as I can... The ship I came up with is actually a teeny little thing about the size of Bethesda, but noteable in that is has 3 engines (more engines equates to less power needed to turn and hence better maneuverability ..If your pilot can keep up.) and a grappling hook for boarding other ships, along with a side-mounted cannon, probably low ammo, high power for threatening or disabling other craft. It would be lightly armored but pretty fast, mostly suited for taking unarmed or lightly armed merchant vessels and the like. But! If that's not the ship you had in mind, (it could be a bigger, cruisier vessel with more guns or cargo and better armor, more of a fighter rather than a hit-n-run vessel) or if anyone would just like to suggest ship types you'd like to see, feel free to pipe up. I will be starting the section on shipbuilding soon, hopefully beginning at the end of this week or the next. I think I should build a few more as practice and to work out any bugs first.

That's pretty close to what I had envisioned actually, a ship that favored speed and striking power over armor. I'm not sure about the size , and the one gun though, mind she housed about 24 persons. Perhaps around the size or slightly bigger than a Vulture, along with maybe two or more guns? Definitely low on armor however, it only took a round from the Goliath to sink her.
Another note, one of the things I wanted to express about the Raven class down the line in Tom's memories was it's mutability as a ship. IE it's easily modified. The story behind the Morrigan itself was that Gammel and his mechanic (who I've yet to make a character for) had extensively modified it with the Hell Begat Six in mind, hence why they named her after a death goddess. I'm not sure how this would be reflected in your construction of the Raven class, but it's something I thought I would throw out there.

Hmmmn. Well 24 peeps means a much bigger ship, yeah. The one I've got will probably only hold a dozen or so. I'll design a larger vessel but try to keep it fast. The shipbuilding rules definitely can handle making alterations to a ship. The entire thing is modular in nature, you can change compartments around if you need to. I haven't put in rules for actually doing this in-game, however. Anyway, I'll see what I can do.

Ta-DA! This is most of everything the game needs to know about the ship. It looks like a lot of typing, but really most of it is from templates, so I can copy/paste a lot of it.
The actual ship is sort of fun, I tried to get a bit min/max'y with the design, specifically with regards to the ratings of different bits of equipment. It's approximately the size of Bethesda, but only about half as heavy (and over twice as expensive) with a top level speed of ~120mph. But structurally it can only handle 80mph or so before it starts coming apart.
(You can't just put a huge engine on a light ship and make it go fast, it'll break up. the structure of the ship has to be strong enough to support the speed it travels at. So a fast ship also needs to be a solid ship, comparatively. And this balance between power and structure keeps you from getting ridiculous bare-bones ships with huge engines and speeds of 250+. Like you can't stick a jet engine on a go-kart.
Obviously the Hornet has more power than it can really use. I could have added weight (in extra structure or higher-rating compartments) to balance it perfectly (80 level speed, 80 Overspeed, or maybe even a little higher) but I wanted to leave it some extra horsepower for things like vertical mobility and turning. It's only got one gun and it's side-mounted, so positioning for a shot would probably be tricky without a maneuverable bird.
ANYWAY. I still have more to do. I have to create the structure and the compartment stat boxes for the ship sheet. And even though the Hornet is a pretty small ship class I'm encouraged that this hasn't taken real long so far.

Wow so okay. Finished the Hornet class yesterday, and moved on to the Raven. I'm sort of learning new things every time I put a ship together, so this time I went with 4 engines at 2K rating, (8,000 power total) 3 cannons, and a grapling room. I had to put in TWO boilers to handle the steam throughput (engines sucking 8k worth of steam pressure, cannons can eat another 10.8k if they all fire in the same turn.
I balanced out the Power and Overspeed and got a slightly frightening 90.3 as the maximum sustainable level flight speed. For those playing the home game, that's faster than the Hornet I just made, faster than Stormchild, and even faster than Lucifer.
Raven is a big girl, too, clocking in at 15 compartments and 145.3 Tons. (Lucifer is actually heavier by 20 tons but shhhhh. She's sensitive. >.>)
On the flipside she barely has more armor than the Hornet, 15-20 in most places, the bridge has the most at 25. Like the Hornet she's build for speed, and so her insides aren't at tough as all that and she'll probably fall apart under fire fairly quickly, especially given that 11/15 compartments contain something that has a chance to explode when damaged.
Oh and she's a mite bit expensive. $291,900, which is ~40k more than Luci. Though I'm constantly messing with the values for things like cost, so the actual coast may not match up. The differences are small but I'll still have to revise all the ships I made before the next official version rolls out.
So... yeah. I'm also going to be looking over the rules that govern maneuvering. Right now I have it so that the number of engines actually makes ships more maneuverable, but that plays into a nasty scaling game where you can just add more weight, more engines, then more weight, then MORE engines and have a huge ship that still turns really well.. (Though in the 'real world' of the game you'd be limited by things like cost and maintenance, which aren't issues if you're just building 'em for testing.) But anyway I may have to do the opposite actually, and penalize maneverability by the number of engines present.. Which may actually may make more sense.

Well, Raven class is mostly done, with the exception of some visual fluff I'm still working on. But here's her final stats:
[Bulk: 150] [Empty Weight: 145.3 Tons] [Max Carry 174.7 Tons] [Max Power : 8000 Hp] [Firepower: 52] [Armor: 830] [Crew: 20] [Cargo: 15] [Level Speed: 90. 9 K/h][Overspeed: 90K/h] [Max Climb: 3,000 f/m] [Max Range: 15,271 Km] [Value: $291,900]
...Jesus Christ she is FAST. -_- But that price tag is a bit much, too.
Anyway. I found the sheet I'd done for Goliath again, so that'll be next. After that I ought to do one or two more then I should be ready to get Steam Armada going. Though hopefully I ought to be able to add some more between the time it starts and the time it finishes...

Hehe.. Yeah it's probably for the best, and I can't really afford to pay anyone for anything anyway. The compartment stuff'll get done, and technically it -is- done, just not to the extend i want it. In the end I'd like 5+ variations on every compartment type. I've got 1 for most, and that's enough to move ahead. Except turret cannons. I need to do those still, just to set them apart form the regular ones. I'll just have to nickel and dime it to death, time wise and update old ships with new art as I go along. Otherwise we'd be stopped for weeks and I'd get really REALLY burned out on it.

Quickie update:
I made art for the turret cannons! Huzzah!
All the airships have had their stats adjusted for the new flight system (which I'm calling 1.1, and which will be used for Steam Armada.)
global changes include:
• Airships are more difficult to pilot overall.
• Airships are more expensive. (Changed the price rate of armor/structure, and added a price to a few previously free bits and pieces.)
• Airships now have Total Rating and Average Rating listed amongst their stats. Average ratingwill probably have an effect on the total number of ships that can be fielded per any given battle in Steam Armada.
Over the weekend I hope to complete the Goliath and maybe 1 or 2 more ships, as well as get a bunch of other SA stuff done. Here's hoping. Here's also hoping I remember to GO TO @#$%^&* SLEEP at some point.

I am this awesome with Illustrator: Some Character placers for SA.. The green circle is for health, the yellow dots indicate rank (Rookie, Regular, Vet and Elite) The text at the bottom will be names, rather than saying the class, which is that the icon is for. Other than that I've been laid up with a soul-destroying headache, so I didn't really get to any of the other stuff I wanted. And no worries Brendur, we all get That Week from time to time. Hope the bonfire turned out well! I live that sorta stuff.

Huh... You know I guess I could rig something up, present peeps with little buttons or stickers or medals or whatevar to stick in their signature areas or summat. Eh.. something to think about, I guess.
In other news the Goliath has a tentative price tag! $682,750
It has an armor rating of 3060. And a top speed of 36.3
So no it's not exactly nimble...
But it's also got 120 firepower and the general hope amongst the Concordiat war minstry is that whatever it comes up against that the Goliath and doesn't just sort of get vaporized immediately will just sort of run out of ammo before doing any real harm...
This sort of conveniently ignores the fact that it can be handily outrun by basically any sort of motorized anything, so anything that doesn't -want- to fight the Goliath can just sort of shrug and amble away.

In regards to slow posting in game thread: Mostly I have been crazy busy lately. Kid with ear infection, related doctor's visits, medication threatening and enforcing, volunteering at school, steering meetings, blah blah blah.
Yesterday was unfortunate timing with me being able to check game threads at 10 a.m. and not after, when the update with the opening doors was up.
And, yeah, there's a bit less excitement since the end was mentioned and because this last bit of things I haven't felt there were many choices for characters to act on, but rather things we need to do in a certain way and I might prefer those kind of things to just be moved along by the powers that be gm.
So, there you have it. Ear infections ruin everything.
