MENGLER::: =============================================== ::DEPLOYMENT::Indicate which ships you would like to field and the placement of crew within them, along with what grid location you want them to begin at, and of the green-overlaid squares around the edges are acceptable Ships can start at any altitude from 1-20, and there are no restrictions on the number or type of ships that can be deployed. Since we are still hashing out what's going on with Kieran and his ship, just add him and his crew when you've got it figured out. =============================================== ::NOTES::In addition to the loot spots you see on the map, there may well be some valuables worth grabbing on the compound… Just make sure you have the strength to carry them safely or they might hold up at the wrong moment. Turrets are handled like airships that can't move. They are Size 30 for purposes of targeting, and do not get an evasion bonus, (obviously...) Each has a 360° field of fire. These particular models do not have protective armor, making it possible to knock them out with a single lucky shot… Additionally they do not get Air Tac rolls, they will automatically go last in every round. But they are powerful (20 damage) and routinely overcharge, so don't take them too lightly. There'll be quite a lot to do this mission, but just keep your mind on the overall situation and you ought to do fine. Keep an eye on your ships' fuel levels though, they might be up for a while. The next morning, bright and early, while the ships are being tuned for the mission and Jim is busy breaking in the new crew Victorian style (with plenty of pomp and vinegar), Kail calls a strategy meeting with the pilots and captains of the other ships. The meeting is held within the shade of the Shrike, allowing Kail to have coaxed Six out of the Shrike long enough for her to attend. Bill and Lizard have had a grand old time using cups, ration biscuits, and bits of bacon to create a fair replica of the battlefield on a table. When everyone gather's Kail clears his throat and begins.
"Gentlemen, ladies, my plan is to approach the target from the south-east in a tried and true T formation, with the Shrike, Ariel, and Cordelia forming the front column, and the CA-258 bringing up the rear. You can stop that snickering Lizard I'm not finished. The front columns first and foremost goal will be to bring down those turrets and establish air supremacy. The south-east turret first from formation, then splitting and broadsiding the two flanking it's sides, and finally eliminating the northwest turret. The CA will maintain formation out of turret range until the three vagabonds engage the last turret, upon which it will begin approach with the bulk of our ground forces which will comprise of any hand to hand and ranged personnel West, Whitney, and I dedicate to the task."
He pauses for a moment taking a sip of his coffee and moving pieces about accordingly on the table.
"Once that last turret is destroyed the Vagabonds shall maintain a perimeter about the manor Shrike at the North-West, Ariel at the South-West, and Cordelia at the North East, and the CA will deploy our ground force from the South-East. We are to let no one leave the grounds to set out for reinforcements, we'll allow any that wish come out and lay down arms. Gunners I suggest opening fire on any that try to run but do NOT open fire on the manor in any way, we don't know where this equipment is and without it this game turns belly up. Ground forces are to enter the manor, locate the equipment, or failing that Dr. Mengler himself. On that note, seeing that Rosalind is our most competent medic and keeping the Princess alive, I suggest she not join the ground crew and instead spend the flight drawing up a list of what she needs for Stitch who will be joining the ground crew. As the CA is the more heavily armored of us, I also suggest we move the Princess to her for this mission"
Lizard titters into her hand "He'll be proxy for whatever bullet Rosalind's got coming to her. OW!!" She grabs the back of her head where Kail rapped her smartly before continuing and not missing a beat.
"Also due to the importance of this mission I suggest one of the captains accompany the ground crew, I'd like to volunteer myself for that duty if there are no objections." Kail looks around for any objections...

Rosalind clears her throat.
"Ah.. If I can interject a moment... Mr. Rotheschilde and I have been talking, and we both agree it would be better if Princess Nyvella didn't come with us for this. Her condition is delicate and I'm afraid any undue jostling might cause a rapid turn for the worse. You know how rough things can get during hard maneuvering, to say nothing of actually being hit... Luckily Mr. Rotheschilde had some prior medical training.. I've been working with him and I'm confident he can keep her stable untill we get back. There's a small tent in Ariel's hold, we had the idea that we could set it up some ways away from the field and it would probably escape attention. That way the Princess would be safe and I could still be a useful part of the mission. ..Not that I'm particularly looking forward to it; it's been a long time since I've been shot at, and I was rather hoping to keep it that way. ...But if it does so happen that I do have a bullet coming for me," -she spares a distasteful glance for Lizard- "I've been instructing Liam on Dr. Mengler's procedures. I think there's a good chance he could succeed in my stead, if to came to it. ...Probably."
---- ( (A few additional notes: You can also parachute troops unto the objective. Parachutes are consumed when used, however, and -someone- is going to have to swing by and pick them up eventually. Jet-packs can also be used in a similar manner. They aren't used up, but they don't have enough power to jump up to a ship either, so as before someone will have to pick them up as well.
Using either of these methods to land troops has the unfortunate side-effect of them being put in a random location on the grid once they get to the ground, so they may not (probably won't) be all together when they get down. They can also end up on roofs or other odd places.
The main advantage to using parachutes to drop troops is that you don't have to land at the target, simply passing over it is enough. So it's a lot faster and doesn't carry the risk of being caught with no eva bonus if you're attacked. ))

West clears his throat. "s'A good plan. Let's do it. Kail, if you want to go down there with the party, I'll play a nice song at your funeral and try to keep the guns off you as best we can. Daryl, round up the troops from both our ships." Whitney nods and Elias, Eli & Dallas walk the short distance to stand between Arial and Cordelia. When the collective crews have gathered, West halts the various whispering and muted coversation with a wave of his hand. Whitney mutters under his breath, "God I wish I could do that..."
"Alright, folks, listen up. This is one for our ground teams. Rosalind needs to find some experimental medical equipment to fix up the princess. You all are here to make sure that gets done. In case of unforseen events, one of Captain McCullogh's crew knows the rough wherabouts of the equipment and what we're looking for. Let's make sure that won't be necessary. Gene, Thaddeus, Adam & Beth, I want you on that ugly piss-hunk of a ship Kail got us. Tanya, Andy, Kay, you're over there with them. Do what you do best. Oliver, I want you to stick to Rosalind like glue and don't let anything happen to her. As much as I trust her confidence in the good Dr. Rotheschilde, I don't like no one I don't know and I'd appreciate it if the best doctor in the skies wasn't laid flat before we have a chance to perform insane, mad scientist surgeries and whatnot. Captain McCullough will be going down there with you. I know you all are plenty good on your own, but it's what he wants and, as such, you need to treat him like the Captain he is. Ms. Tyler, I'd like to give you a formal welcome but we don't have the time. As you're the newest addition to Ariel, I want you to shadow Cheri until we take to the sky and let her show you around the ship. Do whatever she tells you to, treat her as your commanding officer, ken? If you can do that, we'll get along fine. Oliver's been watching that front engine and that will be your post. You might need to clean up after him as I'm sure he doesn't know what he's doing..."
"Hey now!" The corner of West's mouth turns up in a slight smirk.
"Okay folks. Let's not get killed. And let's steal us a mad scientist's lab."

Kail nods to everyone gathered before whistling his crew back to the Shrike, Roban and Midge manage to fit themselves on Jukka's wide shoulders to peer over everyone's heads. There's a mixture of confusion and apprehension among the crew, sure Kail's been a captain, but a military man? That was something he struggled not to be. This however was most assuredly a military operation and setting. A whispering match between Sun and Shin begins to turn a little more physical as Sun socks his identical brother in the shoulder, it seems another shouting match is about to start, but a cold glare from the Captain shuts it down before birth. He draws himself up and looks his each of his crew in the eye going from face to face.
"I think it's gone unsaid, mostly due to relief, that we shouldn't have survived our last fight. We were out-gunned, in enemy territory, and we were caught by surprise. Fortunately for us so was the Savelle Air Guard. We won't get that lucky again, because now we're on the offensive, and they know we'll be coming.
That means we have to step twice as light and thrice as smart from here on out. These aren't besotted pirates or disorganized merchants we'll be going up against, but trained and synchronized soldiers. Any man-jack or lady-love amongst you who doesn't like those odds, well you can collect your severance now and I won't think any less of you."
Kail pauses and looks around seeing if any of his crew will take him up on his offer. Stitch starts to raise his hand, but immediately puts it down after a downward glance at where Lizard is casually aiming her pistol. Lizard takes the opportunity to speak up, clicking her heels together and raising her free hand to salute in fine military fashion.
"Think I speak for the crew sah, when I say the Savelle Air Gaurd can go fuck themselves, and you can to if you think we're going to show the yellow of our bellies at this hour. "
Most of the crew sets up a unanimous cheer at the young pistoleer's reply, Grizzly blanches at Lizard's language, however she too sets her jaw and nods after a moment. Kail smirks, returning Lizard's salute before whistling for silence.
"Right then, Jim, Bill, Lizard, you'll be accompanying me to the CA-258, I've heard nothing but gripes and groans about how you haven't see any action so I expect your best down there. The rest of you will man the Shrike for power and not speed, we'll need those turrets taken out quick so aim sure and steady, keep the old girl safe for when we come back."
Six's eyes grow round at the news that Kail will be on the CA-258, she begins signing in a peeved manner.

Kail snorts at statement "So it does, Midge didn't do so bad last time, she'll man the instruments and maps."
While Midge's face can't seem to make up it's mind between blushing from the praise and bewilderment from the task, Six's mood does nothing to improve.
-She's an idiot!-
Midge's face immediately fell from her perch on Jukka's shoulder "I'm only right HERE."
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Kail summoned up what patience he had on hand. " She'll do fine, and she'll still be taking orders from the other captains and sticking to the plan. I need to be on the ground for this Six, it's going to be chaos down there and someone needs to keep order."
Six's hand comes around and strikes Kail soundly on the cheek, fingers moving with spite to convey her last thoughts before she storms back onto the Shrike.

In the stunned silence that followed the display, Bill couldn't help but get in the last word in a manner most deadpan.
"Well it's good to know you have options."

Oh, a few more things about combat…
Every character in the game counts as having both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon. So of need be any character can snap off a shot if they have to.
For purposes of shooting of course Musketeers have the best scores, and the additionsl advantage that all their shots do 8 damage, while everyone else does 5. (these numbers are subject to change during testing)
As a reminder the Musketeering roll is D100 [+musketeering] [-range][-cover] Vs. Difficulty 70, in case you feel like calculating your to-hit odds.
A result of 70 or higher means a hit, but you don't start getting into bonus damage territory till 100+, like in Cannoneering.
Swashbuckling has been changed in that if an attacker loses a swashbuckling roll they do not take damage. (This change will be going into effect in SP! as well) But the damage dealt is still based on the difference between the scores, if the attack is successful. So pretty much the trick to get good use out of your melee kids is to gang them up on classes that have poor melee skills to rack up the damage. Swashbuckler vs. Swashbuckler tends to lead to a prolonged fight with little damage going either way, unless their skills are mismatched or there's some lucky rolls. Also worth remembering is that Swashbucklers are stupidly tough, especially at high ranks.
++-SPECIAL NOTE++
Not related directly to combat, but a change I've been considering for a while will be going into effect soon. The rating a compartment will now have an effect on any repairs being made to that Compartment. Basically a -1 modifier for every 100 points of rating. (-20 modifier for 2000 rating machinery, and a whopping (-50 modifier for 5000)
This is meant to both make repairs more difficult and help balance out use of higher-rating compartments. Right at the moment the only real disadvantage to using a high-rating compartment is the increased cost..(and to a lesser extent weight) This should make it so a bit more thought will have to go into compartment ratings, since -if it breaks, is anyone going to be able to fix it?- will now be a factor. The idea being that higher-rating stuff is not only bigger and more powerful, but also more complex and more difficult to fix in a hurry.
Anyway… This is going to be under evaluation. It may go away if it it doesn't work out like I hope.

Yeah I wasn't sure what was up with that, either. >.> It's like Krupp, god of cannons just hated that one compartment or something... At least as far as places on the ship that can get shot off go, that was a pretty unimportant one...

Ehehe... yeah. >.> The armor in the cargo compartments is actually the worst on the ship.. 10/10 all around.. So you're a bit lucky nothing found it's way down there, either.. It got all tore up while you were on the roof of the loot point too... Vagas really aren't friendly for landing troops, which is in part why I made the grapple version.. well.. That and the troop Condors...

How are you gentlemen? Doing the Monday thing a bit early... So this weekend I went and updated the SA rules a little and added a new section on ground combat. It's basically what I posted earlier so you probably don't really need to check it out unless you feel you need a refresher. This week I'm going to spend some time doing some more compartment art, I think, to add a little variety. I should be adding new boiler and pressure tanks, so not every ship will use the same art. Also I'll be putting in another cargo bay and another turret cannon, and I'll probabaly retrofit some of the old ships with new art and reupload them. I also have to add the new gunnery control compartment, so I expect I have my work cut out. If it's a very quiet week I might have it all done by the Friday. I have 2 ships in the works, tentatively labeled Valiant and Destroyer. (Guess which one is Union Steamworks?) Destroyer is ready for assembly and I have tentative stats for it: [Bulk 160][267.8 tons][~60kph][$500,600][70 firepower][1566 armor][51,200 total rating][3,200 rating average] ..Which, for those of you keeping score, puts it as not much bigger than a Raven but almost twice as expensive. .. Now why is that? Why indeed? ..and how long till you fight one? ;D In other news; I have a side project running. When I get burned out on SA/SP! or when I leave my files on the wrong computer I'll spend maybe an hour or two messing around with it. It uses a similar combat system and rules as SA, just a lot simpler. Okay! Since I might be to busy tomorrow to post here's what I've done so far this week: New Metal compartment background! Gunnery compartment! Pew pew! New turret cannon: New cargo room, with mechanized crane! ..The crane is on an accessory layer, so technically you can put it in any compartment. Currently I'm working on another boiler room, (hope to be finished today) and after than another Pressure tank.. I'm thinking I might add another bridge, and maaaaybe another new cannon.

Whew! Super busy yesterday, didn't have a chance to do much of anything.. Today I think I'm back to doing compartments, which I think I'll be carrying on with for the rest of the week. Over the weekend I did a little work on the side project I mentioned earlier. Like SP!/SA I have it rigged so you can build your own machines, (though the process is a lot simpler. You can just pick components from a list and just bolt them on, basically. But I have stat weights on everything so if you're feeling min/max'y you can go through and custom-build all your components from scratch.) Additionally I'm still quibbling over some minor points and rules, but I think I have a pretty good notion how I want it to play, and I'm happy with some of the ideas I've come up with for it. One of the problem I'm dealing with now is how to display all the information I need to. The game uses an overhead grid like SA, but unlike SA it's locked to the grid, so I don't want the unit markers to spill out of their spaces like they can in SA where the grid is only for reference, really. Anyway. For now, back to compArtment. Looking forward to the game resuming.

I made a ninja edit to the Crew rules just now:
CLASS SWITCHING
Your Crew can change classes between battles. This results in a loss of Rank and Experience, so generally it's best only to do this if you are short a particular type of crew and have no other way of getting one.
Changing a Crewmember from one class to another drops them down 1 Rank. So a Veteran changing class would become a Regular of whatever their new class is to be. They also lose any experience they had build up towards their next rank, and begin their new class with 0 experience. Rookies can be class switched without losing Rank (as they are already at the bottom) but they still lose any experience they may have gained.
Captains are special cases when it comes to class switching. Only Elite Characters are eligible to class-switch to Captain, and in doing so they are knocked down 2 ranks to become Regular Captains, and lose their Elite class skill.
Class Switching also can not be performed on a Character that is newly purchased.

Hey hey, just a quick little thing before I forget to mention it, (again) The SE turret most likely will be destroyed the next turn no matter what happens. (It has a ~70 severity fire, which will do 7 damage during it's upkeep, and it hasn't got that much Condition left. So it'll basically just burn up before it has a chance to do anything.) That fact would be pretty obvious to anyone looking at the thing, but not as obvious when you're just looking at the map or the enemy part of the writeup.
In other news: I'm now keeping track of what malfunctions are caused by which player ships, so you should get proper credit if a malfunction caused by one of your shots destroys or incapacitates an enemy target, even if it happens a few rounds after you hit it. (For instance, when SE turret burns up, Shrike will get the credit.)
There are 2 levels of airship kill credits, a Disable and a Kill. Disables occur when you damage a ship enough that it breaks off combat and tries to escape. A few things can cause this to happen, but generally if you beat a ship up enough that the Captain decides he doesn't have a shot at winning anymore s/he'll try to bug out. Crippled engines, destroyed guns or damage to core systems (boiler/pressure tank/bridge) or just a lot of smashed armor in sensitive spots all contribute to this decision.
Some ships/crews will be harder to rattle than others, and some fanatics won't run at all, they'll keep after you till the bitter end.
It should be noted, by the way, that running is also an option for you as players. Simply run your ship off the map of any mission and it'll immediately be removed from play and put back in your bank. (this also immediately halts the progress of fires and other malfunctions) It may not be the bravest of tactics, but in some cases it might be better than losing a ship... Anyway. A Disable is indicated by a grey ship outline with a single red slash mark across it. ( \ ) A Kill is a grey outline with a red X (as seen on Shrike currently. Disable credits can be shared, if more than one ship contributed to the damage, but usually Kill credits will be awarded to just one ship (though another ship might get a Disable credit for contributing)
What constitutes a Kill? Basically if a ship can't fly anymore, that's a kill. Destroying the bridge will do the trick (the ship will lose altitude and crash, inevitably) as will destroying enough engines that it can't pay it's flight cost. (again, inevitable crash). Destroying a pressure tank or Boiler will likely cause the same effect, though some ships have more than one. A ship can survive without a boiler for a few rounds in some cases, (operating on residual pressure in the pressure tank) but it'll go down eventually.
While in some cases a ship may still be capable of firing it's weapons after it's been forcibly grounded, honor dictates that once a ship has been forced down, it's out of the fight and it's crew must cease hostilities. (Though they may still defend their ship if attacked) This is a long-standing pact that is honored by all.
Kill credits don't have an effect on anything, they're just hull candy, essentially. But I thought it might be fun to start tracking some stats so you can see what ships have done what, and build a little history.
As you can see I'm tracking turrets (and later armored turrets) as well as ships. I'm tracking salvage taken as well, since not all ships are out there to blow up other ships. I'll also be counting enemy ground troops as well. If a grounded crew gets a kill the credit will go to the ship that dropped him/her off.
One last thing, and this IMPORTANT. I didn't realize this till late, but CA-258 does not have any cargo holds.. That means anyone that picks up salvage on the ground will have to unload it on a ship with holds, or the cargo will be lost and not worth anything at the end of the mission. No this doesn't really make sense in realistic terms, but it's part of how I had to balance cargo holds between SP! and SA
So.. Uhh.. Just keep that in mind.
