Whew.. Well it was a little quiet last week; I'm hoping things pick up a little bit this time around. Nothing really new or exciting to share right at the moment, I spent a little time over the weekend fiddling around with bot game. But this week I'm back to working on SA/SP!. I still want to do that one bit of cannon art and then I'll put together the newest ship I designed. I also think that very soon it'll be time to write out the shipbuilding rules at long last...
Anyway, I hope that everyone's weekend was peachy and all such. ;D

(( sorry, this month is the RPM Challenge which I've been doing the last couple years and between that and actually having some work come in this month, little things -- like keeping up on games, eating, showering, buying groceries, etc -- get lost by the wayside. Ah I gotcha. Well no worries, and I'll czech out the tracks once I get the chance. It's great that you're getting some work too. Sounds like you're pretty damned busy, but in the future when it looks like you won't be able to post for a while just let me know so I don't sit around wringing my hands wondering what's going on. Of course on the flipside I know stuff like this can really sneak up on you, so anyway. Should we not expect you back till after 3/1? In other news: After checking some of my files I'm declaring it Steampunk!'s first birthday this week. ..Actually it was probably closer to the start of the month but Eeehh. But yeah, it's been a year since I started. Let's take a look at the oldest design doc I have: ==================================== ------------------- Flight mechanics:
The ship must expend an amount of Lift equal to it's weight in order to stay aloft.
Additional power can be used to propel it at a rate of 1 movement per 1/2th of weight.
It can gain altitude at a rate 1 vertical movement per 2x weight.
The steampower is routed through the various engines, each of which has a maximum rating. Losing an engine means the remaining engines have to work harder.
If the engines cannot generate more lift than the craft's weight, it will begin to descend at a rate of 1 Vert a round. If it generates less than 3/4 weight, the descent rate is 2 Verts, 1/2: 4 Verts, 1/4: 8 Verts.
Touching the ground at anything more than 1 Vert of descent is considered a crash and deals severe damage.
--Turning--
Turning is based on a ratio of Engines toweight.
[Bulk/10] / [Engines x2]
-----Examples------ 110 Bulk / 4 (2 Engines x2) = 3
110 / 8 = 2
110 / 10 = 1
Round the result up.
The result is the miniumum trurning radius of the vessel. A Turning Radius of 2 means that after turning one Heading to the left or right, the ship must travel forward 2 spaces before it can make another heading change. (The Ship may make a Heading change at the beginning of it's movement phase, before moving forward, but it may not make any additional turns unless it moves.)
------------------------===================================== Looks like the basic flight rules. Neat. Some stuff has changed (look at those turning radius rules.. glad I changed that..) but a lot of is is the sameā¦ I started with the airship rules, of course. The character stuff didn't come along till a while later. Did you know when I started the game it had character classes? It's true! I wish I still had the docs for those but I believe they've been trashed. Essentially I just assigned stat weights to certain stats, so it was 'cheaper' to buy certain stats depending on what class you were, and you would get access to special skills depending on your class. The classes were pretty much the same as the SA classes, actually, except there was an additional 'dandy' class that dealt with social skills and stuff. After a while I decided not to regulate anything though. But anyway yep, 1 year. A lot's been done, but there remains a lot left to do yet. Yarr.

Well, hello and welcome to Monday.
Over the weekend I did a little work on the mech game you may have heard me gab about recently. I got through about 10 rounds of combat testing on Saturday. So far everything works about like I thought. There are some weapon balance problems I've been fiddling with but I think I can clear everything up with a minimum of changes. Namely increasing recoil for Cannons and making their ROF dependent on their damage. The other problem wasn't really a problem with my design, just one of the mechs I made. I had a mech using 2 medium-sized lasers, when it would have been more effective to use 1 much bigger laser. (Because lasers diffuse over distance.)
..So yep. Otherwise everything's going pretty well... This week I plan to finish up with the Destroyer class airship. I'm about 45% done already. And then I'm not sure what I'll do. I'll either start on another airship or put some work into vehicle rules. Yarr.

Stray leaves and bits of foliage are whirled into a miniature cyclone as 258 slows to a near hover, dropping the last fifteen feet to the deck in a businesslike manner, despite the tightness of the landing site. Within seconds of 258's runners digging into the dirt of the pad, all three of the troop doors are open and the crew has spilled out into the compound.*Captain Rotheschilde<radio>: Landing party's down safe! how's things look up top? -Ariel-Captain West<Radio>: They're splitting up, but keeping their distance for now. Scraped us a bit near the pressure tank, but everything should hold. Just keep your mind on that you were taught and we'll all be fine. =============================================== ::NOTES::All right, one thing to remember is you can use a ship that's hovering at ground level to provide fire support to any landed troops. I.E. next round 258 can shoot at things on the ground, so long as it stays at ground height on that square. Remember though that cannon shots hit (or have a chance to hit) EVERYTHING in the square. You can also damage and make holes in walls, just indicate what wall in the square you'd like to aim at. For instance, "G3, West wall" Shots are considered to be coming down from an angle, so you don't need to specify a square on the endge of a building. Remember that shots can MISS, (Mechanically it's the same as a called shot, it can be off by a square in any direction) so be careful of calling fire too close to friendly positions. Unexplored enclosed areas of the map are covered over in grey. In order to save space I've substituited full-size placers with smaller letters that reference the full placers. I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out. ALSO::: Due to a mistake in scale, each movement action you make allows you to travel 2 squares for this map. (to a max of 4 if both Actions are spent on movement. You cannot move diagonally. (though melee attacks can be made to a diagonally adjacent square) DOUBLE ALSO::: Doors that are denoted as dark brown squares.. They're sort of hard to see at the moment I'll have that fixxed by next round, hopefully. The doors to the main building are at D3 and G5 & G6 And I think that about covers it.. Heya. ;D Don't forget you have your guys on the ground to give orders to, too. The ground action and airship stuff happens simultaneously (well, technically the airship stuff happens first, for purposes of organization) so if you've got orders for the groundlings you can just give them at the same time as you do your airship orders. If anyone has Aaaannnyyyy questions at all about the ground phase stuff, don't hesitate to ask. I know I sort of tossed it at you guys... Oh yeah. Stats for the Destroyer are done: ============================= [Bulk: 160] [Empty Weight: 278.7 Tons] [Max Power : 11,200 Hp] [Firepower: 70] [Armor: 1569] [Crew: 30][Cargo: 15] [Level Speed: 60.5 K/h][Overspeed: 160K/h][Evasion: 2.0] [Max Climb: 1,800 f/m] [Max Range: 17,424 Km] [Value: $502,100] [Total Rating:51,000][Avg. Rating: 3,200] [1.2] ============================= This ship has the single biggest cannon to date, a 30-damage monster with +12 to Cannoneering skill. Sitting next to is it a fire control station which can add a further +25 to Cannoneering. So.. uh.. Yeah you do the math on that. >.> It also has 2 other guns, one fixed to the side and the other a turret, both 20 damage. It needs 4 mid-sized engines to get up to it's top speed. Got two boilers, but that's a lot more common now with a lot of the bigger ships. Has pretty thick armor (maxed to bow and stern, 40 point coverage over the vital areas, 20 over most everything else) Has a big crew capacity, so you can fill it up with engineers for overcharging and still have some people left over for ship defense, or boarding or what have you. In all, with the exception of one glaring design flaw (the 2 smaller cannons are too far away from the fire control center to get it's bonus) I think it's a really good ship. Of course at half a million, it had damned better well be. edit: here ya go.

The air above the compound buzzes and howls with the sound of rotors and fanjets as the five ships engage. Ariel and Cordelia bank sharply in unison, turning end for end as gracefully as machines weighing nearly a hundred and fifty tons can. As they begin to pick up forward speed the turret guns aboard the nearby Oakes vessel crack out a broadside. The shots whip by Ariel to the left and right, bright dots the size of medicine balls, but none finds its mark. As the distance closes Ariel's forward turret aligns on it's target and fires, savaging it's target's lower deck, tearing open the forward cargo room. Cordelia follows suit moments later, sending two shots into Furie's flank, though the range deprives them of much of their power. To the Northwest, Iron Shrike nudges forward under Grunwald's guns. The brown ship fires at long range, two of the shots go wild, but two more slam against the tear turret, jarring the occupants and weakening the armor but causing no serious damage, as the range closes, Shrike's own cannons come into play, and abruptly Grunwald is obscured by the flashes and smoke as shells burst and explode all along her flank. On the ground the sound of even the cannonfire is drowned out by the sharp snaps of rifle fire. The two soldiers on the ground behind their flimsy tree covers are quickly dispatched, but fire continues to rain down from the cement towers at the corners of the wall. In the midst of the fusillade one of the new former concordiat recruits grunts and stumbles. He staggers on his feet for a moment but makes it to the wall with the rest, looking more annoyed than anything else. A momentary lull in the shooting allows those clustered against the wall to have a look through the window. The room beyond is filled with boxes and barrels, hanging links and other sorts of food. The window is barred with iron however, and entry is impossible. ((Sorry for the quickie writeup. Feeling a little tired and uncreative. ((Ordinarily you can toss a grenade into an adjacent square. Since I borked up on the scale of this mission though, on this map only every Move action lets you move 2 spaces (for a max of 4 if you use both actions) and you can throw a grenade 2 squares.
The towers are maybe only 15 feet high, just tall enough to see over the wall to the outside. For the purposes of modeling though they are just rooms, no special consideration is made for them being tower-ish.))

Also, I was just reading your ship orders and it looks like you're trying to get Cordelia to take a shot at the compound; In order to do that they're need to be directly over it at ground height, basically where CA258 is.

((Actually it isn't really specified anywhere... But everyone has both a ranged and a melee weapon. Howevah most non-musketeers have pretty crummy musketry skill (though there are a few exceptions) so their chances of hitting aren't all that stellar, even at close range. Musketeers and Captains do 8 base damage with a ranged attack, everyone else does 5, though damage is subject to change through out testing... ))

Minor change, but one important to list here I think.
I'm amending the cannon steam usage a little. Previously the D rating for steam use was 90%. (You'll notice most of the 2000 cannons use 1800 steam) However many of the canons in the game wound up with D steam use ratings (I can think of only 2 or 3 that don't offhand, and since 1800 is a pain to deal with compared to 2000 when it comes to subtracting from steam totals I'm amending all D rating cannons to use 100% rating cost of steam per shot. This also makes a non-D rating a little more desirable.
In a nutshell: VAGABOND TURRET CANNONS NOW USE 2000 STEAM PER SHOT. (the side guns still only use 1400, the A, B, and C ratings are unchanged.) This change goes into effect immediately, but you may not see it reflected on sheets for a while, until I have a chance to amend everything and reupload.
